Boyfriends and Black Boxes (with pictures!)

August 2nd

Thursday. I go to the lounge because I don't want to stay in the dorm, but it is too early to go to work. Priscilla is in there, and so I sit and talk with her for a bit. I really need to do laundry, so she walks with me to the caf, and I put my things in the washer. We walk to the sac and sit on

one of the tables waiting for the store to open, because Priscilla would like to buy some things. I am sitting with her, describing what all of the t-shirts look like. 12:00pm arrives, when I have to report to work, so I leave her there. We serve pb&j. Seems like that is all we are ever

serving, haha. So I ask Zach why the store hasn't opened, and he said that it should have been. Priscilla waits there for about 20 minutes, talking with some people, and one time when I glance over, she is gone. She must have gone back to the Village. So I am pouring out my frustrations

to all of my co-workers. My phone's speaker stopped working. So I couldn't listen to music anymore, or Skype without headphones. I was just frustrated with my phone. I go back to work, and during a standstill, I check to see if Priscilla had come back. And yes, she had. With Karen

and Ulises too. This was the first time they had seen where I worked and what I did. So they came and said hi. Ulises went to hang out with one of my co-workers, which was also one if his friends, and Karen and Priscilla sat on a table near me. They were waiting for the store to open. I had given Priscilla money so she could buy me a shirt I had wanted, so I too was waiting.

While we were waiting, Zach comes up to those who were serving behind the counter and says, "Ok, I am going over to the Java Hut to distract Jamie. Her boyfriend is going to come through those doors, come up behind Jamie, and surprise her." So Zach walks over to the Java

Hut (which is about 20 feet away from the serving counter) and distracts her. After what seems like hours, her boyfriend appears through the back doors, yellow flowers in hand. He comes up behind Jamie. I'm assuming he said her name or something (I was too far away to hear),

because she turns around. It took her about 2 seconds for it to register that her boyfriend was standing only a few feet away (she hadn't seen him for awhile. They have a long distance relationship.). And then she screams and runs over to him. They were hugging and whispering for

like 10-15 minutes before they separated. I had never met her boyfriend before, but she talked about him a LOT. But just from watching what just happened, he is a sweet guy.

So, Karen and Priscilla were still waiting for the store to open. Zach was on it. He brought someone over, and Karen and Priscilla went "shopping". Then they left to go to work. I stayed in the sac until around 3pm or so. For some reason, it was a really long day. After I

finished cleaning and putting everything away, I went to the caf to do my laundry. I switched it from the washer to the dryer, and left the room. I went downstairs to the actual caf expecting to see either Karen, Ulises, or Priscilla, but I saw no one. I sat at a table and got on my phone while

waiting for my laundry. Then I see Karen. She starts spraying down the tables, and Ulises came behind her and put the chairs onto the table. She came by me and we chatted while she cleaned off my table. Then Ulises came. "What's up, Me-kyla!" So I go upstairs to check my laundry. I turn

the handle on the door, but it won't budge. I try again. Nothing. The door is locked. Why would anyone lock the laundry room door? So I go back downstairs and tell Karen. Karen in turn tells someone else, who tells someone else, who tells someone else. But eventually the matter got

into the right hands, and they came and unlocked the door for me. One of the women who was told about the whole ordeal comes up to me and says "Thank you for not using a knife to try to unlock the door. We have so much ruined silverware from people doing that." Well,

I am glad to have been of service :) So I check my laundry in the dryer. It isn't even dry. So I turn the dryer on again, and wait about 15 minutes before becoming impatient and taking my clothes out. They were mostly dry, but still damp, so I hurried to the Village and quickly folded and put them away. It was nearly time for me to go back to work.

I was working in the sac. We were serving pizza. And Zach was short handed, so he needed everybody. And then I get a text from Jamie asking me if everything was going ok in the Java Hut. Oops...no one told me I was working in the Java Hut. So I tell Zach. He was ok with it, and said

he'll "make do". I go over to the Java Hut, and begin preparing it for business. Jamie is on her way, but she hadn't arrived yet. As I was opening up the store, I was watching a young woman throw a black box into the air so that the guy from the balcony of the second story

could catch it. Only, he missed, so the box came back down. The woman tried to catch it, but it grazed her fingers, and fell to the side, hit the window, and bounced back...right into her face. The girl fell. The box fell. Everything seemed to go in slow motion. The guy from the second

story asked if she was ok. No response. I can see he looks terrified. He quickly climbs down the ladder. Soon, people are rushing over to her. One guy runs around, in need of ice for her face. He said there was blood. Lots of blood. I felt sick to my stomach. What could I do? I

prayed, of course, but even that didn't seem to be enough. I felt partially responsible, even though I had no idea who the woman was and why she was throwing the box in the first place. I felt lost. Sad. Miserable. I felt like I should have done something...anything...differently. And I felt

really awful not rushing over to her when she fell. I just stood there like a statue. I wasn't the only one who witnessed it. Almost everyone else in the sac witnessed it too. But we all just stood there. To shaken to move.

Thank goodness for those who took quick action. They sat with her for about 15 minutes, and then they slowly walked her out. At least she could walk. That was a blessing.

Jamie showed up, and we began the shift. It was an easy shift, and before I knew it, it was over. I cleaned the restroom for Zach because he had no other females working that evening. And then I was on my way to the mini muffin society to see Shannon. She had just arrived back from

her four-week long mission trip as well. So I arrive at Aimee's house. Me and Shannon sit and look at pictures of Panama. It is a gorgeous place. So many trees. And she shows me where they slept, and the different people who went on the trip with her. I really enjoyed it.

Someone had brought rice krispies to the party, with peanut m&ms inside...my favorite. Shannon didn't like peanut m&ms, so she gave me all of hers. I really was enjoying my evening over there, but I didn't want to stay all night, so I left early. As I was leaving, Shannon

walked me out. And every time I say bye, we always found something else to talk about. "You know, we are reminding me of our moms!" Shannon had said. Our moms have known each other since before I can even remember, and they always have a hard time saying bye...there is

just too much to talk about!! So eventually I leave. And I make the long hike back to the Village. I go into the lounge, and Karen is sitting there reading a book. We talked all night. It was really nice. No distractions. We really got to know one another, and a deeper friendship was forming. And then Ulises and Andrew came in and played Foosball.
