The Search for Caleb (with pictures!)

(First of all, please forgive me. This is a really long post...I'd be surprised if you read through all of it. I hope you do though. Enjoy!)

August 3rd

Friday. I was scheduled to work in the Java Hut all day, so I decided to wake up early, take a shower, so that way I could leave my hair down. Since I wasn't working with food, this was ok. So I did my hair.

I put it up halfway. I also dressed up. I don't know why. Maybe because it was my last day in either the sac or the Java Hut. Both were closing down for the Summer. So I put my hair up halfway, and I walk to the sac with Rachel L. I am preparing the Java Hut for opening, and Zach

passes by to get something on the other side of the room and stops to talk to me. "You're hair looks very nice down," he smiled. I had always worn my hair up for work, so this was almost everyone's first time to see it down...well, halfway down at least :) Zach passes by again, this

time the opposite way. He stops again. "You look very Scottish. With your hair halfway down, and because it is curly. It's a compliment," then he goes on his way. Awe, thanks Zach :) So lunch shift is soon over, and I go sit with Amber for a late lunch. I stay in the sac because I am

working the Java Hut at 1pm. So I go back to work. This was a special opening for interns. They get $2 off any drink. Karen comes up because yesterday I had given her a $1 off coupon, only to find out it was void today because of the sale. But I made her a drink, and she went to work.

The shift ended at 3pm, I walk to the Village, and just come right back at 4:30pm. My last shift in the Java Hut. I was so sad. I didn't know what else I was going to do for the next 2 weeks, but this was so bitter. There was no sweet to it. I really loved the Java Hut. Thor works with us.

Kaylah and Nick hang out. And after we close, we start tearing everything down. I clean out the blenders, part of the fryer, and the refrigerator. I got to take home everything Jamie didn't want. Two trays of Oreos (one was mint, my favorite!), a box of pizza from Zach, two

free t-shirts (thanks to the free table, and to the person who stuffed a newly bought t-shirt under the Java Hut counter and never reclaimed it), and instant coffee for Priscilla. She is always going on about coffee. And then I left. It was about 8-8:30pm or so. It felt so late...but yet so

early. I was done with work. I could stay out of work for the next two weeks, and just hang out, or I could enjoy my weekend, and search for a job on Monday. I chose the latter. But first, I wanted to enjoy a few days off.

So I am walking to the Village, and I pass a group of girls. "She has pizza!! And Oreos! Hi Miss, can I have a slice of pizza? Or maybe an oreo?" I felt really bad, but I said no. So they left, very disappointed. I went to the dorm to grab some my bracelet bag, drop off my t-shirts,

and then head to the lounge. I walk in, and Karen is sitting on the red couch. She looks at me and says, "I'm bored. I'm bored just thinking about how bored I'll be this weekend." I told her I agree. A new woman volunteer was in the lounge too. She was on her computer, and her name

was Mariam. We didn't ever officially meet. She just kind of jumped into my life. Desiree comes in, and we start talking. Our topics range from crashing the Gala to tips for fundraising. We spent a lot of time explaining one method to Desiree, but she just doesn't seem to get

it...oh well, we tried :) And then another new volunteer comes in. I had seen her before in the dorm, but we hadn't officially met either. Her name was Christa. She had come in with Priscilla. They started talking about one of the guy volunteers. (Wait...how many guy volunteers are

there now? Four?) Apparently he dropped his phone in water and came to the caf looking for something to help it. I asked them if he had put his phone in rice, and everyone stopped what they were doing and just looked at me as if I were crazy. "What, you've never heard of putting

your wet phone in rice?? Where have you been?" They just continued to look at me. Whatever. Then someone mentioned that this guy, Caleb, had a car. Me and Karen were just discussing how cool it would be if we could all go to the mall tomorrow. The only problem was...we didn't

have enough seats for all of us...we really needed another vehicle. So when we heard that Caleb had a car, there was no containing our excitement. We got SO excited. Actually, excited isn't even the word. Karen and I start making all sorts of plans to go out tomorrow using

Desiree's car and Caleb's car. So, without even asking Caleb, we are already making plans with his car. Actually, we didn't even KNOW Caleb. All we knew is that he was a volunteer. And he had a car. So we decide we should find Caleb. So Karen and I go to the guy dorm and

knock on the door. At the time, some missionaries were staying in there, so this young boy, probably 11 or 12, answers the door. "Hi, is Caleb there?" We asked him. He looked confused and said, "Caleb Garcias?" No. Not Caleb Garcias. So we come back to the lounge,

feeling sad and depressed. I needed water, so I take my water bottle and go outside to the water spigot to fill it up. On my way, I run into Ulises. I don't think he recognized me at first. And then he was like "Oh, what's up, Me-kyla!!". I smiled, and tried to explain the situation as best as I

could. "So, we are looking for Caleb. He is a summer volunteer and he rooms with you. Go into the lounge and ask Karen about Caleb, and she will tell you everything." I said. His eyes kind of glazed over. Not really. But he did  look a bit confused. So I told him to go to the lounge, and

ask Karen about Caleb. "She will get really excited and tell you." And he was like, "Ah, ok. I go ask Karen about Kyle...I mean...Caleb...", and he walks off...but not to the lounge. He talks to some kid sitting on a picnic table. I fill up my water bottle, and make it back to the lounge before he

does. And then I tell Karen that I found Ulises and he is going to look for Caleb. "Great!" She said sarcastically. Ulises comes in, and they talk in Spanish. He can't remember the guy's name, but he tries to pretend that he does. "Caleb. His name is Caleb," I whisper to him. He doesn't

want Karen to know that he doesn't remember the guy's name, so I stand behind him, and he turns his head slightly to the right so he can hear me whisper, and then he repeats the guy's name to Karen, who is directly in front of him. Then he says, "I find Caleb!" and leaves. Oh dear, we all

hope he can find him! So we continue to talk. I am standing by the foosball table, talking about the turn of events. The lounge door opens, and Ulises walks in with Caleb. Me and Karen are laughing. Ulises actually did it! So we begin interrogating Caleb...only to find out it isn't

the right Caleb. Ulises had just gone to random missionaries, asking for Caleb. One guy was like, "Yeah, I'm Caleb", and Ulises told him to follow him to the lounge. He was needed. So this unsuspecting Caleb walks into a lounge full of laughing people. He stands there awkwardly

while we are laughing. Not necessarily at him...just laughing at the whole scenario. Ulises doesn't really understand what he did wrong. He brought us Caleb.

"I'm Caleb," Caleb says.
"No, you are not," Karen laughs back
"Actually yes...my name is Caleb," I think he was getting a bit frustrated.
"Your name might be Caleb, but you aren't the right Caleb," Karen replies.

So Caleb leaves. I can only imagine what he goes and tells his friends. Poor Caleb. I turn to Ulises and tell him, "Make sure he is a summer volunteer. Caleb, summer volunteer." So Ulises leaves. "I look for Caleb, summer volunteer." Actually, we decide to go with him. So

Karen, Christa, Ulises, and I walk out to the parking lot. We are acting like a bunch of crazy people. Me and Karen ate WAY too many Oreos...we stop right next to the restroom, and Karen announces that she needs to go to the restroom, so she takes the opportunity and goes.

So Christa, Ulises and I are talking. We know we need to find Caleb, but honestly, we don't know where to even look. So we stay in the parking lot until Karen comes back, then Christa announces that she too needs to use the restroom. So then it is Karen, Ulises, and I. We are just

getting crazier and crazier. Christa comes back and says that she is going to bed. So Karen, Ulises, and I talk for a while longer, and we decide to head back to the lounge. Suddenly Ulises remembers that he has to go do laundry. Someone had told him that if he leaves his laundry

overnight, they would throw it out (which isn't true. I have left my laundry over night, and I know a lot of other people do it too. I'm not sure why someone would tell Ulises this...) So Karen and I return to the lounge. "No luck?" Mariam asks. Nope. None at all. Not that we did

much searching. We stayed in the parking lot all night. So I am sitting there, making a bracelet, when I suddenly remember that I have pizza rolls in the sac freezer. Jamie gave me a whole bag after they failed to sell in the Java Hut. So Karen and I walk all the way to the sac, I open up

the freezer, and they are gone. I was heartbroken. I really wanted some pizza rolls...oh well. We arrive back to the lounge, and buckle down making some more bracelets, when Ulises comes in. He has his laundry with him. And he is excited. "I find Caleb!!! I went to the caf, and asked

people. I heard someone call for Caleb, so I went up to the guy and asked him if he was Kyle." "No..." "Oh...what is it Kyle...Cale...CALEB! Are you Caleb?" "Yes...why?" "People need to talk to you in the lounge! They are looking for you!" So Ulises told us that he ran all the way here

to tell us. So me and Karen are really excited right now...we keep talking about all of the possibilities we can have tomorrow with Caleb and his car! I told Karen it would be best if she talked to Caleb. I couldn't really seem to control my laughter, let alone hold a civil conversation with

someone I didn't know. So Caleb arrives. Turns out, I had seen him before. He came into the lounge the previous night to microwave something. He didn't stay long. Just enough to feel awkward with us watching him (his words, not mine). So he comes in, and Karen lets him

have a seat. He looks so confused. He keeps looking at me because I can't seem to stop laughing. Karen slowly tells him about how much we love him, and appreciate that he took time out of his life to volunteer...how we really want to be best friends with him. Then she

asks him what his plans were for tomorrow. He said nothing. "Oh, good! Maybe you could come to the mall with us?" "Uhh, I don't know. It isn't my car." Uh...what? I spent this whole evening under the impression that is was Caleb who owned the car. But in reality, I guess it was Trey's? "I'll

ask Trey about it tomorrow. I'm really tired, so I am going to bed." He bid us goodnight, and left the lounge. Our bubble seemed busted now. We had spent the entire evening looking for the wrong guy. But we would know for sure in the morning if he could take us. We were just hoping he would. So, we all settle down, and go to sleep for the night.
